Twenty years ago, the US government made GPS satellite coordinates available to the general public.
Within days, individuals figured out how to make a kind of scavenger hunt using these coordinates by hiding a container, or “cache,” announcing the coordinates, and challenging others to find it. Geocaching was born!
Mingo was one of nine original caches established, and today is the oldest still active cache IN THE WORLD!
In May 1-3, 2020, people from all over the world will be in the area to celebrate this anniversary. Be prepared to join in the fun by learning how to find hidden caches using your cell phone! Cost is $5.00 per person; Thomas County Historical Society members free. This geocaching workshop will be presented by Ryan Semmel from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Prairie Museum of Art & History.
